The most common error that I see in seamark mapping is incorrect category assignment of preferred channel lateral marks. To remind everybody, the IHO definitions are:
"Preferred channel to starboard lateral mark: At a point where a channel divides, when proceeding in the 'conventional direction of buoyage', the preferred channel (or primary route) is indicated by a modified port-hand lateral mark."
"Preferred channel to port lateral mark: At a point where a channel divides, when proceeding in the 'conventional direction of buoyage', the preferred channel (or primary route) is indicated by a modified starboard-hand lateral mark."
Remember, if the preferred channel is to starboard, then you will pass the mark to port (and vice-versa), therefore the mark will look like a port-hand mark, but with a band of opposite colour.
An incorrect category will not affect the rendering as long as the shapes and colours are correct, but a routing application would follow the non-preferred channel.
