Hi to everyone,
I'm currently studying GIS, and after a lot of research for creating web map service for maritime services that will include shipyards, ports, and live positions of vessels for my final thesis i found Openseamap project.
I don't have that much of experience around web designing, however i do understand the basics around it. Moreover i was wondering if the openseamap project can be used for academic purposes, in terms of customizing it for my project needs? in the meantime all the data created and implemented for my own purposes could be used to the actual openseamap project.
I'm looking forward for you thoughts/ideas.
Regards,

Hi Marios,

Nice to here that.
What other project have you found? Is there something similar on the web?

OpenSeaMap does not stand for "A closed sea map"
Most of our code is already released under free licenses. Have a look at our github account: https://github.com/OpenSeaMap
You are free to fork our repositories and use them for your needs. Always have a look at the licenses for details!
The source for the main map (http://map.openseamap.org) is at https://github.com/OpenSeaMap/online_chart.
It uses OpenLayers2 for displaying the map. Some HTML and JS as glue code around and some php scipt to deliver data.
Please note that most of the code is outdated but all tries to make a new map are absorbed in thoughts
If you need more information about our sub projects have a look at our development wiki: http://wiki.openseamap.org/wiki/OpenSeaMap-dev:Portal
Feel free to ask questions, edit the sites and submit pull requests!
