Hi from Switzerland

Hi

I am Martin from Bern. I love spending time on the water, mostly with my kayaks or my laser, and when I have the opportunity (way too rarely) with bigger sailboats both on lakes and the sea. The other thing I do is computer stuff, and I always have a pet project. The current one is (and has been for quite some years now) a raspberry pi based boating software, which offers a logbook, gps based navigation, route planning and some other features. And it does have a very basic approach of using offline maps from osm and openseamap. It might not be as sophisticated as other systems out there, but it works well for me. I call it the PiLot, and anyone who is interested is kindly invited to have a look at it, use it, or contribute.

In the future, I would like to improve the maps, replacing the tiles by a vector- or generally data-based approach, and I would like to offer the user a simple way to enter points of interest or other data, which in the best of all cases could be fed back to the OSM database. This might be an approach to help completing the seamarks data and keeping it up to date. But that would need some competent contribution. We will see...

If you're interested, have a look and let me know what you think: [https://github.com/RCgmbh/PiLot/]

Greetings
Martin

Re: Hi from Switzerland

Hi Martin,
welcome aboard!
Regarding your PiLot, did you join the https://signalk.org community, yet?
You might also promote on https://open-boat-projects.org (via https://www.segeln-forum.de/board/195-o … jects-org/ )!
My basic vector-tile (waterways) approach is here https://brouter.grade.de
Have fun, Dirk

Re: Hi from Switzerland

Hi Dirk
Thanks for the warm welcome! Your waterways vectors map is going exactly in the direction I want to go, I might get back to you on this. SignalK is certainly interesting, and it's a bit of a pity it didn't have it on my radar from the beginning. As I use the PiLot mainly on my kayak, I'm currently not missing all the fancy NMEA-Integration too much though. Thank you also for the link to the segeln-forum, I will certainly post there!

Thanks again, and have a great weekend
Martin
